Today I learned - if I hadn't learned it before - that if you want to win at D&D, play Shadowrun.

My only pre-registered event today was a Masque of Red Death game. MoRD is a version of D&D set in a Gothic horror version of late 19th century Earth. It's a very atmospheric setting that draws heavily on Gothic literature. At any rate, the game had a very small sign up - just me and two other players. As most of you will know, small groups tend to make for very difficult D&D games. Despite this, we conducted a very thorough investigation and then planned out, set up, and executed our final combat encounter with such ruthless efficiency that we completed what was supposed to be a six hour game in only three-and-a-half.

This was the seventh time the GM had run this scenario. We were also the only group that A) identified the real villains on the first try and B) prevented any casualties to the civilians.

How did we do this? Ruthless planning.

I'm reminded of another GenCon game I played about four years ago. It was a d20 Modern military game set in Cambodia. Despite the GM having run the scenario a half-dozen times, we'd been the one of only two groups to complete the adventure without friendly casualties. The other group was composed of real-life marines.

Play Shadowrun. Learn to plan!
